In January 2010, renovation of this 10-story, 62,400 square foot facility began. This 1920s -era structure was in need of complete refurbishment so that the YWCA could continue with its central mission — providing shelter and affordable housing to Madison’s disadvantaged population. Throughout the yearlong renovations, the building, located on Capitol Square, remained occupied by the YWCA’s 150 residents. Renovating floor by floor, the contractors installed elevators and a central heating and cooling system, and reconfigured housing units for accessibility and space. Care was taken to preserve the building’s unique historical features.
