A New Elementary School For Madison’s South Side
This fall, the south side of Madison, Wisconsin, will experience a significant milestone as a brand new three-story elementary school opens its doors. This development is particularly monumental for the neighborhood, which has never had an elementary school within its boundaries. With the completion of this project, students residing in the Rimrock Neighborhood will bid farewell to their long bus commutes to Frank Allis Elementary School, and instead, enjoy the convenience of attending a school located in their own community. As part of the reshuffling, the current Frank Allis Elementary School, built in 1916, will be repurposed as the new home for Nuestro Mundo Elementary School, MMSD's dual-language immersion charter school that is currently in a leased space in Monona.
After passing one of the largest referendums in Wisconsin’s history, the Madison Metropolitan School District selected Huffman Keel Partners as their Owner Project Manager to help oversee their various projects, including the construction of Southside Elementary School. Ryan Burton, an HKP Development Manager, is leading the collaborative efforts with construction company Findorff and architectural firm EUA (Eppstein Uhen Architects) to ensure the school is ready to welcome students for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Southside Elementary School boasts several noteworthy features designed to create an exceptional learning environment. One standout element is the large skylight installed in the cafeteria's roof. This skylight incorporates a unique "bird glass" that acts as a deterrent to prevent birds from flying into it. The school's roof will also be transformed into a rooftop garden accessible from the third floor, providing students with a green space for outdoor activities and hands-on learning opportunities.
We encourage you to take a quick detour down Rimrock Road and check out the new school for yourself. As the construction progresses, you are encouraged to stay connected through our social media platforms for updates on this exciting project.
